Musings about the Ngoc Son Temple by 3E1

The Ngoc Son Temple is surrounded by the lake Hoan Kien. As we entered the Ngoc Son Temple, we saw 2 pillars with Chinese characters (luck and wealth) engraved on them. From this, we realized that the Vietnamese are like many Singaporeans who pray for blessings of prosperity and luck. As we cross the wooden bridge that linked the shore, we saw a tower pagoda in the middle of the Hoan Kien lake. We found it very special as we have never seen such sight in Singapore before. In fact, Singapore doesn’t even have a lake.
As we walked further into the temple, we saw statues of different gods like “Guan Gong” and “God of Literature”. One interesting observation that we made was that plates were designated for worshippers to place their offerings to the Gods. This is quite different from the way it is done in Singapore as boxes are used for worshippers to place their offerings. This shows that Vietnamese are respectful towards their Gods and will not steal from the offerings. During the 15 minutes given to explore the temple, we found out that there was a temple dedicated to the tortoise when King Le returned the sacred sword to the tortoise. We found this a very enriching experience.
