Hanoi’s Super Cyclos
It was a 1-hour trip exploring the Ancient Quarters in the Vietnamese version of trishaws called cyclos. It reminded me of the trishaw riders in Singapore who parade around the city area carrying tourists. But the similarity stops here, for this trip is far more exciting and definitely life- threatening.
Maybe it is because it was the peak period in the evening. The traffic was heavy. It was as if the whole of Hanoi was rushing home after work, and the traffic was criss – crossing. But our cyclo rider was very clear about his route and our destination. He was able to weave in and out, avoiding any collision with other road users. The zebra crossing and the traffic lights were rendered useless as no one was following the rule. Common sense prevailed.
During the ride, we saw many people wearing masks in an attempt to protect themselves from the harmful effects of air pollution. The noise was ear-piercing. There was hardly 10 seconds of silence on the road. Everyone was honking along the way just because they wanted the others to move aside.
This cyclo trip was much slower then bus rides and therefore we were able to enjoy more of Hanoi’s uniqueness. Three quarters of the roads contained motor-bikes. It was not uncommon to see taxis but buses were really rare. At times, there were three people on a motor-bike and without helmets.
Despite the risks involved, it was a worthwhile experience for a mere 20,000 dongs.
