The importance of tourism to the Vietnamese

Tourism is an important source of income for Vietnam. Some tourist attractions are Ha Long Bay, Thien Cung & Dau Go Caves and Hand embroidery factory. For tourism to work, it is supported by several industries like the cottage industry and the transport industry.

One example is the Ha Long Bay where ferry rides services are being provided. The ferries are made to look old as locals want tourists to have the feeling of being on an ancient ferry going slowly back to the caves where it was once found. Locals work on the ferry to enable themselves to earn a living, some worked as waiters, chefs and ship captains.

To ensure that they can earn a living, firstly they have to attract tourists to visit famous site such as Thien Cung & Dau Go caves. By doing this, they can earn some money as this is the only way where tourists can get to the caves. On the ferry, food is prepared by the local chefs and served to the tourist by the local waiters. What was most interesting for us was the sale of souvenirs on board that are locally made, like the vietnam t shirts and the dolls. It is unique as it is only available in Vietnam and it showcases the culture of the Vietnamese.

We also visited the limestone cave on Ha Long Bay which was formed naturally by erosion. It is protected by the law, which shows how important this place is to the locals as a tourist attraction for the locals to earn an income.

Another example is the Embroidery factory/shop, a cottage industry where handicrafts are being handmade and sold. Intensive labours are needed. The local workers would sell their handmade items here and hence earning an income. This shows that the locals have a secured job working in the industry, hence making an income through tourism.
